Governors Stay Silent On Tax Bills And Other Issues After Abuja SummitGovernors from Nigeria’s 36 states convened on Wednesday night under the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF), but left journalists and observers in the dark as no official agenda or communiqué was issued after the hour-long session. The meeting, which began around 10 p.m. at the NGF headquarters in Abuja, concluded shortly after 11 p.m. Unlike previous gatherings where a governor would brief the press, attendees left without making any statements to the waiting media.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Sources within the NGF informed The Guardian that the meeting primarily focused on the contentious tax reform bills proposed by President Bola Tinubu’s administration. However, the governors reportedly failed to reach a consensus on the matter, which is why no communiqué was issued.

The tax reform bills, which are currently before the National Assembly, have sparked significant controversy, with many governors expressing strong opposition. The 19 northern governors, in particular, have openly rejected key aspects of the bills, calling for their withdrawal.

Earlier, the National Economic Council (NEC), which includes Vice President Kashim Shettima and the 36 state governors, had also voiced concerns over the bills, particularly regarding their potential negative impact on state revenues and the widening economic disparities between regions.

Wednesday’s meeting saw the participation of 15 governors, predominantly from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Notably, opposition governors Alex Otti of Abia State (Labour Party) and Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State (All Progressives Grand Alliance) were also in attendance.
