He Refused To Take It Back — 23-Year-Old Divorcee Finds Unusual Way To Return Bride Price

A 23-year-old Nigerian divorcee, Ugwu Tessy, has revealed how she personally returned the bride price paid by her estranged husband after he allegedly refused to accept it from her family.

Tessy said she got married in 2020 as a teenager and had three children during the marriage before the relationship eventually ended.

According to her account, efforts by her parents and kinsmen to return the bride price to her former husband were unsuccessful because he allegedly declined to receive the money.

She explained that the situation became a concern because the return of the bride price is traditionally regarded as an important step in formally ending a marriage in her community.

Now in a new relationship, Tessy said she decided to take matters into her own hands rather than continue waiting for her former husband to accept the money from her family.

On September 9, 2026, she shared a screenshot of a bank transaction on Facebook showing that she had transferred the bride price directly to her former husband.

In the accompanying message, Tessy identified herself as the former wife of Ejike Tobias Ugwuoke and stated that she had personally returned the bride price he paid in 2020 after he allegedly rejected attempts by her parents and kinsmen to return it.

According to Bush Radio Academy, Tessy appeared determined to bring the matter to an end by taking responsibility for returning the money herself after previous efforts by her family failed.

Her action has attracted attention on social media, with some users reacting to the unusual approach and others sharing similar experiences involving the return of bride price following the dissolution of a marriage.
