Peter Obi Rejects Calls To Step Down For Atiku, Reveals Why He’ll Contest In 2027

Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate Peter Obi has addressed speculation over whether he could step down for African Democratic Congress candidate Atiku Abubakar ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Speaking during an interview with Arise Television, Obi explained that the issue could no longer be treated as a personal discussion between him and Atiku because both men are now presidential candidates representing different political parties.

According to Bush Radio Academy, the former Anambra State governor said any potential arrangement between the two opposition camps would require discussions involving their respective parties rather than a unilateral decision by either candidate.

Obi explained that political cooperation between the parties would be similar to a merger between two corporations, stressing that such a major decision could not be made solely by the individuals heading the organisations.

He said the fact that both parties already have presidential candidates meant that any discussion about stepping down or forming an alliance would have to involve the structures and interests of the parties concerned.

Obi and Atiku have a history of working together politically, having contested the 2019 presidential election on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, with Obi serving as Atiku’s running mate. However, the two politicians are now pursuing separate presidential bids ahead of the 2027 election.

The NDC candidate was also asked about claims that he had previously rejected an offer to serve as Atiku’s running mate. Obi dismissed the claim, saying he was not in a position where such an offer had been made to him and therefore could not have rejected it.

His comments come amid ongoing efforts by opposition figures and parties to explore possible cooperation ahead of the 2027 presidential election. Obi’s position suggests that while discussions may still be possible, any agreement involving him and Atiku would have to go beyond a personal understanding and take into account the interests of their respective political organisations.
