Falana made this plea while critiquing the police’s account of Ajaero’s arrest. The police had denied detaining the NLC president during the union’s rally in Owerri, Imo State on Wednesday.
According to the police, Ajaero was taken away only when troublemakers hijacked the NLC Trade Union rally in Owerri.
However, Falana contended that the police’s explanation had significant flaws. In a statement he issued, Falana questioned why the police failed to arrest the individuals responsible for Ajaero’s mistreatment in their presence.
He stated, “The police’s narrative regarding the assault on NLC President Comrade Joe Ajaero is riddled with inconsistencies.
Why did the police not intervene to shield Comrade Ajaero from the violent attack by these so-called troublemakers? In essence, why did the police not prevent his assault?”
“So, the police, who were eyewitnesses to the attack but failed to make any arrests, suddenly decided to take the victim to the police clinic.
Members of the public who decried the brutal attack captured photographs that exposed the police’s misleading account.”
“It is concerning that the police attempted to justify the actions of the so-called troublemakers by asserting that Comrade Ajaero had defied a court order.
Why did the police not allow the court to address Comrade Ajaero’s alleged contempt of court?”
“We call upon the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that the police officers responsible for brutalizing the NLC President face swift prosecution.”
