Nine people have been confirmed dead after a Learjet 60 aircraft crashed into a residential neighbourhood in southern Florida, United States, on Sunday, in an incident that occurred less than seven miles from President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort.

US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed the fatalities, describing the incident as a horrific tragedy. The aircraft reportedly departed Austin, Texas, and was heading to the Bahamas when it crashed near the Cresthaven neighbourhood in Palm Beach County.

According to officials, the aircraft went down close to the entrance of a mobile home park, triggering a major emergency response. Palm Beach County Commissioner Joel Flores disclosed that approximately 600 residents were evacuated from the surrounding area and taken to shelters.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who spoke with reporters near the crash site, described the incident as catastrophic. He also confirmed that no injuries had been reported among people on the ground.

Videos circulating on social media, which had not been independently verified, appeared to show the aircraft descending rapidly before striking the ground. The impact reportedly triggered a massive fireball and left a burning crater near a busy road.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced that it would investigate the crash alongside the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) to establish the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

Meanwhile, an audio recording shared on the air traffic monitoring website LiveATC.net has reportedly captured what appeared to be the aircraft crew describing worsening conditions shortly before the crash.

In the recording, a voice from the cockpit reportedly mentioned moderate turbulence and efforts to manage ice accumulation on the aircraft. The speaker also indicated that the plane was encountering precipitation and needed to climb.

Moments later, the crew member reportedly issued a distress call, declaring, “Mayday, mayday, we’re descending 10,000 feet per minute.” The reported descent rate subsequently increased to 20,000 feet per minute, prompting another emergency declaration.

The voice was then heard saying, “We’re going to crash into the ground,” shortly before communication with the aircraft was lost.

The incident occurred about an hour after President Trump departed from the nearby Palm Beach International Airport aboard Air Force One at approximately 11:55 a.m. The President had reportedly been at Mar-a-Lago before leaving the area.

Stormy weather conditions had been reported around the time of the crash, with Trump seen carrying an umbrella while boarding his aircraft. However, investigators are expected to determine whether weather or other factors contributed to the Learjet accident.

The FAA and NTSB are continuing investigations into the crash as authorities work to establish its cause.
