On Friday, four lawmakers who had previously withdrawn from the process held a press conference, accusing the Governor of violating the 1999 Constitution. They said the Assembly was left with no option but to exercise its legislative power to impeach him.

The lawmakers also alleged that Fubara engaged in blackmail and lacked the trust needed to resolve the state’s ongoing crisis. They claimed the Governor and his Deputy appear more interested in intimidating the Assembly into halting the impeachment than pursuing any peace process, allowing acts of impunity to persist.

They stressed that the impeachment actions are constitutionally supported and urged that no ethnic agenda be attributed to the proceedings. The lawmakers held Fubara and his Deputy responsible for the breakdown of the state’s peace process.

The Rivers State House of Assembly, under Speaker Martins Amaewhule, had failed to resume plenary on Thursday, January 15, 2026, a week after its previous sitting. The House had first initiated impeachment proceedings on January 8, 2026, citing allegations of gross misconduct, including the demolition of the state assembly complex and unauthorized spending.
