Additionally, the lower legislative chamber’s inaugural legislative session for 2024 will focus on the Electoral Act Amendment bill.
Several other bills, both proposed by private members and the executive, were disclosed by the Chairman of the House Committee on Rules and Business, Honorable Francis Waive. These include a proposal to amend the Professional Bodies (Special Provision) Act of 2004.
In addition to legislative matters, the lower chamber has also considered motions addressing pressing national issues. These motions encompass urgent topics such as the necessity for decisive measures against health facilities that refuse treatment to accident or gunshot victims without police reports, investigation into the unequal distribution of electricity supply in Kebbi State, environmental degradation in Irri Kingdom of Isoko South LGA of Delta State, and the alleged violations of the Petroleum Industry Act by Nigerian AGIP Oil Company Limited.
Furthermore, the Chamber intends to address breaches of the Appropriation Act by government Ministries, Departments, and Agencies in the execution of capital projects through a motion to be raised during the session.
Moreover, motions calling for investigations into the issuance of National Identity Cards from 2012 to date, the awarding of contracts for the construction of the Akwanga – Jos – Bauchi – Gombe Road, non-adherence to global best practices in the National Policy of Education, and the misuse of sirens on Nigeria’s roads have been identified for discussion.
Regarding the contentious issue of relocating the headquarters of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to Lagos, which has sparked significant public debate, it has not been officially designated for urgent national consideration. As of Monday, it remained uncertain whether this matter would be raised as a Point of Order during the session.
