This resolution was passed during Thursday’s plenary session, following a motion of urgent public importance introduced by Muktar Shagaya, an All Progressives Congress (APC) representative from Kwara State.
The lawmakers urged Lateef Fagbemi, the Attorney-General of the Federation, to recommend amendments to existing laws, enforcing harsher penalties against those dealing in fake pharmaceuticals.
Shagaya raised the motion in response to the growing prevalence of counterfeit drugs and substandard products across Nigeria in recent years. He emphasized the “alarming” surge in fake drugs, warning of its severe implications for public health, national security, and economic stability.
According to Shagaya, Nigeria suffers annual economic losses of around ₦15 trillion due to counterfeit and substandard goods, as reported by the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON).
“The unchecked spread of fake products not only endangers consumers but also discourages legitimate investment in the food and pharmaceutical sectors,” he added.
Shagaya criticized existing regulations, stating that weak enforcement, corruption, and insufficient penalties have failed to deter offenders. He noted that counterfeit drug peddlers often return to the illegal trade due to “lenient fines and bailable sentences,” allowing them to act with impunity.
The lawmaker called for a national state of emergency to bolster enforcement, enhance the capabilities of regulatory institutions, and enforce stricter sanctions on perpetrators.
The motion was passed without debate and was unanimously adopted through a voice vote led by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who presided over the session.
Following the resolution, the House urged the federal government to enhance the capacity of regulatory bodies, particularly NAFDAC, SON, and Customs, by providing better funding, modern equipment, and advanced technology to improve surveillance, detection, and enforcement efforts.
