Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has challenged his predecessors to publicly swear with the Holy Qur’an that they did not steal from the state’s treasury during their respective tenures. He made this statement in response to criticism of his performance by former Governor Ahmed Makarfi, who claimed that El-Rufai’s administration planned to demolish structures housing nine of his companies.
El-Rufai, without mentioning Makarfi by name, accused some of his predecessors of using embezzled funds to build mansions in Kaduna and Dubai. He asserted that he had not stolen any money from the government since assuming office in 2015. El-Rufai mentioned that he still resides in the only house he owned before becoming governor, unlike an unnamed former governor who allegedly used stolen funds to build a mansion on Jabi Road.
The governor expressed his satisfaction with the ongoing projects in the state and their quality. He emphasized that every naira and kobo (Nigerian currency) allocated to the government had been used for the development of the people, rather than being pocketed or used for personal gains. El-Rufai stated that the projects were intended to endure for many years.
El-Rufai affirmed his commitment to improving the infrastructure of Kaduna, aiming for tarred roads and solar street lights in every community of the state, as well as in Kafanchan, Zaria, and the local government areas. He acknowledged the necessity of borrowing to fund these projects due to the difficult circumstances his government inherited.
Furthermore, El-Rufai challenged all former governors of Kaduna State to come forward and swear on the Qur’an that they did not steal any funds during their tenures. He expressed his willingness to take such an oath himself and called on others to face the people of Kaduna State and proclaim their innocence. The governor criticized his predecessors, questioning the sources of their wealth and implying that they engaged in corrupt practices.
El-Rufai concluded by affirming his integrity, stating that he did not steal any money from the government coffers and emphasizing his belief that leadership is a trust from God, requiring accountability before Him.
