Separated by two decades, Messi, 39, and Yamal, who celebrated his 19th birthday on Monday, represent two generations of Barcelona greatness. While Messi established himself as arguably the club’s greatest-ever player, Yamal has emerged as the teenage sensation many believe is destined to follow in his footsteps.

Few could have imagined that the two World Cup finalists had crossed paths long before either knew what the future held.

In 2007, a 20-year-old Messi participated in a charity photo session organised by Barcelona, UNICEF and Catalan newspaper Sport. At the time, the Argentine forward wore Barcelona’s No. 19 shirt and was still establishing himself in the first team.

Among the babies selected through a raffle for the campaign was five-month-old Lamine Yamal.

Photographer Joan Monfort captured a series of photographs showing Messi gently holding, bathing and playing with the infant—images that would remain largely forgotten until they resurfaced during Spain’s triumphant Euro 2024 campaign after Yamal’s father shared one on social media with the caption: “The beginning of two legends.”

Reflecting on the extraordinary coincidence, Monfort described it as something beyond imagination.

“It is a true miracle of destiny,” he told BBC Sport.

“It is serendipity when you find something extra special, so much bigger than you ever thought. If you wrote this in a film, it would not seem possible.”

Monfort said he only discovered the baby’s identity years later.

“I had no idea it was Yamal until one of my friends called me in 2024 and told me his father had posted the photograph on Instagram,” he recalled.

He also remembered Messi’s awkwardness during the shoot.

“Messi is naturally very shy. He walked into the dressing room and suddenly had to pose with a baby. At first, he looked like he didn’t know what to do.

“Lamine, however, was a very cheerful baby. His mother, Sheila, helped throughout the session. They were a humble family, but wonderful to work with. Messi, as always, behaved professionally and quickly adapted.”

From Rocafonda to the World Cup Final

Yamal’s rise has been nothing short of extraordinary.

Born to Moroccan father Mounir Nasraoui and Equatorial Guinean mother Sheila Ebana, the Barcelona star grew up in Rocafonda, a working-class neighbourhood in Mataró, just outside Barcelona.

His first names, Lamine Yamal, were chosen in honour of two men who supported his family financially during difficult times.

The teenager often celebrates goals by making the number 304 with his fingers—a tribute to Rocafonda’s postal code.

Speaking to El País earlier in the tournament, Yamal paid tribute to his parents.

“What my mother has done, what my father has done, I could never repay them,” he said.

“When you don’t have money, helping your child pursue football is incredibly difficult. They made countless sacrifices to make my dream possible.”

By the age of 19, Yamal had already scored 56 senior career goals, won three La Liga titles, lifted the Copa del Rey and played a key role in Spain’s Euro 2024 triumph.

Messi’s achievements at the same age were impressive but more modest. By 19, he had won one La Liga title and one UEFA Champions League crown while scoring 11 senior goals before embarking on a career that would establish him as one of football’s greatest players.

For Monfort, Sunday’s World Cup final represents the perfect conclusion to a remarkable story that began with an ordinary charity photoshoot nearly two decades ago.

“I think we are closing the circle of their story,” he said.

“It feels like a happy ending. As a Barcelona supporter, I’d love to see Messi finish his career by winning another World Cup because he deserves it.

“At the same time, Lamine has many years ahead of him to win major trophies. Spain are playing brilliantly, and if he lifts the World Cup now, it would be one of the greatest achievements of his career.

“For me, it’s impossible to choose. My heart is split in two.”
