SaharaReporters reported on Friday that Bristol-Arigbariya was subjected to severe mistreatment by the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) following his arrest on August 5, 2024. The arrest was later confirmed by police authorities after activists, including Omoyele Sowore, Deji Adeyanju, and investigative journalist David Hundeyin, visited the police unit where he was held.

IYC, in a statement signed by its Information Officer, Comrade Olali Frank, expressed concern that after 48 hours, Bristol-Arigbariya had neither been charged in court nor granted access to his legal team.

The statement criticized the police for their handling of the case, noting that Ijaws have long suffered oppression from state actors and warning that any harm coming to Bristol-Arigbariya will not be tolerated. The IYC also called for an investigation into the anti-kidnapping unit’s conduct and the prosecution of officers involved in alleged misconduct.

According to the statement, on August 5, 2024, police raided the Osmosis Hotel in Port Harcourt, forcibly removing and handcuffing Bristol-Arigbariya. His family was unaware of his whereabouts until the following day, and despite efforts to locate him, police at various stations denied holding him. Eventually, it was discovered that he was detained at the Mini-Okoro Police Station, where he was reportedly subjected to inhumane treatment.

The IYC condemned the police for publicly labeling Bristol-Arigbariya as a notorious criminal and later changing the charges against him to include unlawful possession and cyber-related offenses. The council highlighted discrepancies, such as the continued activity on Bristol-Arigbariya’s social media account, which the police have accused him of using to leak classified documents.

The IYC concluded by demanding Bristol-Arigbariya’s immediate release and an investigation into the alleged theft of his personal belongings, including access credentials to his cryptocurrency account. They urged that the police be held accountable for their alleged unprofessional conduct.
