Governor Otti has sought to organize a NEC meeting on August 31, arguing that the current leadership’s term has expired. He recently discussed this with the party’s national chairman, Julius Abure.

In response, the National Working Committee (NWC), led by Abure, held a meeting on Tuesday and rejected Otti’s claims, asserting that no leadership vacuum exists. The NWC pointed out that the tenure of the party’s executives was set to end in June 2024 and that a National Convention had already been held on March 27, 2024, to renew the leadership.

The party’s official statement challenged Otti’s motives, highlighting that his Deputy had represented him at the Nnewi convention where the leadership was reaffirmed. The NWC stressed that the Labour Party operates differently from other political parties and underscored the importance of its structure and ideology, which contributed to the party’s successes in the 2023 general elections.

The NWC also announced the formation of a disciplinary committee, led by Barrister Kehinde Edun, the National Legal Adviser, to address the issue.

The communiqué issued after the August 26 meeting at the Labour Party’s National Headquarters in Abuja detailed that Otti’s attempt to dissolve the leadership was based on allegations from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that the executive tenures had expired. The NWC clarified that the party had complied with legal requirements, including issuing timely notices to INEC for the March 2024 Convention.

The NWC’s statement emphasized that the party had met all legal obligations and that any claims of an expired leadership term were seen as attempts to disrupt the party’s operations. The communiqué also noted that there had been no official objections from INEC regarding the convention.

The Labour Party’s leadership reiterated its commitment to following its constitution and legal requirements, urging members to respect the party’s governance structures and processes.
