Jega, who oversaw the 2015 general elections, criticized Nigeria’s “coagulated presidential system” as suboptimal and urged leaders to curtail the escalating costs of governance. He stressed the necessity of devolving power and resources from the federal to state and local governments, advocating for a reconsideration of the power distribution system outlined in the 1963 Constitution.

Expressing concerns over the concentration of power at the federal level, Jega highlighted the need for comprehensive restructuring by 2027. He urged leaders to address the escalating costs of governance, accusing both federal and state executive arms of reckless spending and misuse of power, which, according to him, poses a serious threat to Nigeria’s stability.

Jega asserted that constitutional amendments, particularly those focused on policy decisions to reduce the cost of governance, are imperative. Dismissing the idea of reverting to the parliamentary system without addressing the root causes of financial mismanagement, he warned of potential disasters.

Furthermore, Jega suggested a shift in focus from oil revenue dependence to bolstering agricultural productivity, promoting agro-allied industries, and creating opportunities for the unemployed youth population.

In concluding his remarks, Jega emphasized that while Nigeria may not be a failed state currently, it is undeniably in a state of decline. Urging proactive measures to safeguard the nation’s future, he warned of dire consequences if decisive action is not taken promptly.
