INEC Hits Back At ADC Over Controversial Osun Voter Registration Figures

INEC stated on Monday that over 1.3 million Nigerians completed their online voter pre-registration within just one week of the exercise, with Osun State recording 393,269 pre-registrations during the same period. However, ADC, through its spokesperson Bolaji Abdullahi, argued on Thursday that the numbers from Osun defy historical trends and demographic realities.
In response, INEC Chief Press Secretary Rotimi Oyekanmi clarified that the figures are consistent with past online registration patterns. He noted that when online pre-registration was first launched in June 2021, Osun also led nationwide. Within the first 24 hours, 59,331 accounts were created across the country, with Osun contributing 154,893 pre-registrations in the second week. The state continued to lead in subsequent weeks, reaching over 708,000 registrations by April 2022.
Oyekanmi emphasized that the Commission’s Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS) ensures that only eligible and unique registrants are recorded, while any double registrations are detected and removed. He urged citizens to rely on authentic and verifiable INEC data rather than conjecture, assuring that the Commission will continue providing regular updates on the ongoing online and in-person CVR exercises.
