In a statement issued on Saturday, the anti-graft agency explained that operatives of its Makurdi Zonal Directorate in Benue State arrested 26 suspected internet fraudsters on April 28, 2026. The suspects were subsequently detained for further investigation after the commission obtained a remand order from a Magistrate Court.

According to the EFCC, three of the suspects later requested permission to use the restroom at the detention facility. The request was granted, but the suspects allegedly exploited the opportunity to escape by breaking through the roof of the toilet facility.

The commission said repeated efforts to track down and re-arrest the escapees were unsuccessful.

However, on May 21, 2026, the EFCC said it received intelligence indicating that one of the escaped suspects, Asar Michael Sesugh, was hiding in the Kansho area of Makurdi.

Acting on the information, EFCC operatives moved to the location. The commission alleged that upon sighting the team, Sesugh and some suspected cult members opened fire on the operatives, prompting a gun battle.

The EFCC stated that its officers responded in self-defence and that all the suspects fled during the exchange of gunfire.

According to the commission, Sesugh was later discovered lying by the roadside in a pool of blood. He was immediately taken to the Police Cottage Hospital at the Benue State Police Headquarters in Makurdi, where medical personnel confirmed him dead.

The agency said the incident was reported to the Benue State Police Command, which has commenced an investigation to determine the exact circumstances surrounding his death and to track down other fleeing suspects.

The EFCC stressed that Sesugh did not die while in its custody and was not on bail at the time of the incident.

In the statement titled “Setting the Records Straight on Citizen Asar Michael Sesugh’s Death,” the commission expressed condolences to the deceased’s family while maintaining that it would not tolerate attacks on its personnel or breaches of security within its facilities.

The anti-corruption agency reiterated its commitment to carrying out its duties in accordance with the law and in the interest of national security.
