According to SaharaReporters, a viral video showed a Divisional Police Officer in Kano threatening to use lethal force against protesters. Additionally, Amnesty International reported that at least 13 protesters have been killed during the demonstrations, with incidents in Suleja, Maiduguri, and Kaduna.
Despite these reports, Egbetokun asserted that no police officers used live ammunition. He claimed that any injuries sustained by police officers were due to attacks from protesters. The IGP also stated that only smoke and tear gas were used during the protests, and that water cannons and rubber bullets were not deployed.
Addressing concerns about a reported shooting in Kubwa, Abuja, Egbetokun said he ordered an investigation into the incident. He noted that the uniforms worn by those involved in the shooting did not match the standard issue for police officers, suggesting they might not have been police personnel.
Egbetokun dismissed the allegations of police brutality as “fake news” and reaffirmed that the police did not use excessive force during the protests.
