Bakrin, speaking at a briefing in Abuja yesterday, revealed that the revival of the Nigerian Sugar Institute situated in Ilorin, Kwara State, has commenced the production of two million sugar seedlings while also providing training for approximately 1,500 stakeholders in the sugar industry.
He stated, “The council has facilitated the involvement of two new sugar investors who oversee approximately 20,000 hectares of land under his supervision as part of the Nigerian Sugar Masterplan (NSMP) implementation.
“One of Nigeria’s significant challenges is the lack of proper incentive alignment; without it, individuals tend to act at their discretion.”
Bakrin highlighted the council’s redesign of the backward integration performance incentive framework to ensure alignment between the NSMP objectives and operators’ activities.
Furthermore, he outlined three strategies identified by the council to foster growth in the sugar sector under the Nigerian Sugar Master Plan.
These strategies include setting clear performance targets for the industry and establishing key policy pillars such as backward integration, fiscal incentives, project intervention, and performance management.
“Our primary focus is to expedite the achievement of the NSMP goals through strategic interventions. We aim to increase local sugar output to meet domestic demand, enhance our position as a globally competitive sugar producer, and reduce the attractiveness of sugar imports,” Bakrin explained.
He concluded by emphasizing the sector’s potential to maximize output, as it also generates ethanol, power, and animal feeds, highlighting the goal to expand land availability for the program.
