In a significant stride toward modernizing passport services, the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has officially declared the commencement of the passport application automation process on January 8, 2024. During an inspection of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) facilities in Abuja, Minister Tunji-Ojo, accompanied by the Comptroller General of the Service, Wura-Ola Adepoju, emphasized the government’s commitment to providing a seamless and secure experience for passport applicants. The minister revealed that training processes have already commenced, leading to the live launch of the automation solution.

“We are good to go live. We are starting the training, and on January 8, the solution will be live and direct for Nigerians to have a good feel, a sweet experience based on the Renewed Hope of Mr President,” Tunji-Ojo announced. He highlighted that the initiative aims to minimize human contact in the passport acquisition process while significantly improving the country’s security architecture.

The implementation of the automated system is expected to facilitate quicker detection of fraudulent passport applications and streamline the application process for citizens. Minister Tunji-Ojo underscored the government’s determination to eradicate the use of fake documents in passport applications, revealing plans to deploy document verification officers in every local government area for thorough scrutiny nationwide.

This move follows the Minister’s announcement in November 2023, where he revealed the federal government’s efforts to achieve a fully automated passport application system, noting that the automated application system was “99% done” at that time. The upcoming launch on January 8 signals a major leap toward a more efficient, secure, and technology-driven passport application process in Nigeria.
