The controversy surrounding the allocation of funds not linked to any projects in the budget signed into law for the current year has sparked widespread concern. Reports by the BBC revealed billions of dollars being included without proper justification, further escalating tensions within the Senate.

The situation reached a boiling point when Senator Ningi implicated Senate President Akpabio in the budget padding scandal, resulting in his suspension.

Adding fuel to the fire, another high-profile senator disclosed during today’s plenary session that 500 million was distributed among senators. While some members of the red chamber, including Senators Ali Ndume and Abaribe, clarified that the funds were designated for constituency projects, discrepancies in distribution methods were evident.

Expressing his discontent with the ongoing controversy, Sowore took to his social media platform to advocate for the abolition of the bicameral legislative system, particularly targeting the Nigerian Senate. He described the Senate as a “coven of thieves” and a “retirement home of chronic liars, never-do-wells, and corrupt former governors.” Sowore proposed transitioning to a unicameral legislative arm with a limited number of part-time lawmakers, aiming for greater transparency and accountability in Nigeria’s governance.

Sowore reacting to the whole issue via his X handle, stated: It’s time we seriously move to abolish the bi-camera legislative system, especially the @NGRSenate, which has always been a coven of thieves; it is the retirement home of chronic liars, never-do-wells, and corrupt former governors in Nigeria. We need a unicameral legislative arm with no more than 100 part-time lawmakers.”
