It’s Fake News — FG Reacts To ADC’s Allegation Of Plan To Shift 2027 Presidential Election

Published

The Federal Government has dismissed allegations that it is planning to postpone the presidential election scheduled for January 16, 2027, describing the claim as fake news and insisting that no such plan is under consideration.

According to Bush Radio Academy, the clarification followed an allegation by the African Democratic Congress Presidential Campaign Council (ADC-PCC), which claimed there was an attempt to pressure the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) into changing the election date.

The ADC campaign council, in a statement issued by its Director of Strategic Communication, Phrank Shaibu, urged President Bola Tinubu to abandon any alleged plan to shift the election and called on INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan to resist any attempt to influence the commission’s electoral timetable.

The council also urged the electoral umpire to make any alleged approach to change the date public, insisting that the election schedule should not be altered through secret arrangements.

The opposition campaign body argued that Nigerians should be allowed to exercise their constitutional right to assess the performance of the Tinubu administration through the ballot box on the scheduled date.

It further cited rising living costs, declining purchasing power and widespread economic difficulties as reasons the electorate should be allowed to make its decision without interference.

However, responding to the allegation, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, rejected the claims, maintaining that the Federal Government had no intention of postponing the presidential election.

Idris told journalists that the government was unaware of any move to change the date and insisted that the allegation did not reflect the administration’s position.

He stated that neither postponing the election nor shifting its scheduled date was being considered by the Federal Government.

The minister’s response comes amid political exchanges over preparations for the 2027 general election, with the ADC campaign council calling for transparency and urging INEC to safeguard its independence.

The Federal Government’s denial notwithstanding, the controversy has drawn attention to the importance of clear communication about the electoral timetable and the need for public confidence in the electoral process.
