He argued that the country’s democratic vitality is under threat from reckless rhetoric and hostile conduct. Jonathan stated that for democracy to endure, political actors must embrace civility and genuine accountability. “Politics is not for rascals. It is for people who want to build, not destroy,” he declared, cautioning that aggressive political posturing is eroding democratic resilience across the continent.
Jonathan also revisited the reasons behind the founding of his foundation a decade ago, explaining that its mission includes diplomacy, governance reform, peacebuilding, mediation, and strengthening democratic institutions. In reflecting on its progress, he emphasized that these pillars remain critical to its work.
Alarmed by recent waves of violent attacks and abductions, Jonathan called on leaders at all levels to honor their responsibilities by protecting citizens’ lives and preserving the democratic order. He urged a recommitment to public safety and good governance as essential duties of leadership.
Diplomatic figures, veteran statesmen, business leaders, and political dignitaries from across Africa attended the event, underscoring the significance of his message and the foundation’s influence.
