In a surprising turn of events, Philip Shaibu, the Deputy Governor of Edo State, declared his intention to run for governor in the upcoming election, despite his recent public discord with Governor Obaseki. This conflict led to several incidents, including Shaibu’s relocation from his office to an uncompleted building. CONTINUE READING
During a recent interview on Arise TV, Shaibu expressed confidence in securing the PDP ticket, stating, “The Governor is proud of me…there’s no assignment I have been given that I haven’t done well. What I have done (wrong) is saying that I want to be the state’s governor.” He continued, “I don’t know why you think I won’t secure the PDP ticket; I can assure you I will secure the ticket. I am a party man to the core.”
In a surprising twist, Shaibu also took the opportunity to extend an apology to his former boss, Adams Oshiomhole, for some of the words used during the last Edo election. He emphasized his continued support for Obaseki based on principles, stating, “I want to apologize to him (Adams Oshiomhole) for some use of words during the election. In terms of principle, if I had the chance, I would still support Obaseki because that was the right thing to do.” CONTINUE READING
Despite the political turbulence, recent photos capturing moments of camaraderie between Shaibu and Oshiomhole suggest a possible mending of fences in the complex realm of Edo politics. Another highlight of the interview was Shaibu shedding light on the intended zoning formula by political parties. He asserted, “Justice and fairness should have been in 2016 when Oshiomhole was leaving. The APC ticket then should have been given to an Esan man since Lucky Igbinedion from Edo south handed over to Oshiomhole from Edo north; Oshiomhole should have picked an Esan man and not Obaseki and myself. Justice and fairness should have been in 2016 and not in 2024.”
