After completing primary education and attending Bida Provincial Secondary School, he swiftly joined the Military Training College, Kaduna, due to a deliberate government initiative encouraging young people from the North to enlist in the military.
Reflecting on the Nigerian civil war, Babangida expressed the discomfort of facing former friends on opposite sides. He emphasized the war’s purpose: to unite the country, not to break it, and expressed a hope that such a conflict never happens again.
When asked about his alternative career choice, Babangida disclosed, “I wanted to be a civil engineer,” highlighting how government policies altered his original plans.
Discussing his leadership style, IBB noted the complexity of leading, stating that leaders must be compassionate and sometimes ruthless to achieve objectives. He emphasized the importance of taking responsibility for both successes and failures in leadership.
Babangida expressed his desire to be remembered for serving the country to the best of his ability, fostering good relations with its people, and building friendships nationwide during his tenure.
Offering advice to younger generations, he urged them to understand Nigeria thoroughly, emphasizing the critical role they would play in the country’s future leadership.
Regarding the biopic, ‘Portrait of a General,’ by Nollywood, IBB acknowledged the film’s attempt to provide food for thought and room for improvement, noting that, as a military man, he would have corrected a few details.
Babangida commended the Search Media crew and the management of FUT, Minna, for their role in promoting campus radio in Niger state.
