In an official statement released on Sunday and provided to DAILY POST, Arokoyo condemned the brutal killing of the elephant calves on December 17, 2023, describing it as an unfortunate and premeditated act. He emphasized the inhumane nature of the incident, characterizing it as a willful termination of the lives of defenseless creatures and a violation of their right to live—a responsibility that veterinarians are duty-bound to protect.

The statement also highlighted the distressing reports of the eagles’ killings, further underscoring the need for increased awareness and sensitivity regarding wildlife conservation. Arokoyo informed colleagues and the wider veterinary community that the NVMA is actively engaging with the Nigerian National Park Service on the matter. Additionally, the association pledged to collaborate with the Veterinary Council of Nigeria (VCN) and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security in conducting thorough investigations to address the issue of ongoing animal brutality.

Recognizing the potential connection between these acts and a lack of awareness about wildlife conservation, the NVMA emphasized the importance of promoting non-lethal methods for self-preservation to mitigate threats faced by endangered wildlife species.
