Maureen Chinaka, the spokesperson for the police command, confirmed the arrest of the suspects in a statement issued on Friday, December 22, 2023.
The victim, identified as Alex Ukaegbu, was reportedly in charge of a building site in Osisioma when he was apprehended by the vigilante members for being in possession of iron rods. According to the statement from the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), the suspects chained Ukaegbu and demanded a monetary payment for his release. Tragically, Ukaegbu succumbed to the ordeal while in their custody.
The incident came to light when a complainant reported to the Osisioma Division about the arrest and subsequent death of Alex Ukaegbu. The complainant revealed that the vigilante unit had detained Ukaegbu in their office and was negotiating a release fee of N50,000. Regrettably, Ukaegbu lost his life during this process.
Upon receiving the complaint, police operatives were dispatched to the scene to conduct investigations. The lifeless body of Alex Ukaegbu was then taken to Alanwemadu Mortuary Osisioma for preservation.
The case has now been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further inquiry as authorities seek to unravel the circumstances surrounding the tragic death of Alex Ukaegbu and hold those responsible accountable for their actions
