In a budget performance report for the third quarter of 2023 released by the Abia State government, shocking revelations have emerged about Governor Alex Otti’s expenditure. The breakdown of expenses shows N223,389,889.84 allocated to refreshments/meals, N305,400,000.00 for honorarium and sitting allowances, and N397,520,734.00 for welfare packages. Surprisingly, a significant amount, N737,922,661.25, was reported to have been spent on the purchase of motor vehicles, with no specified details on the quantity or recipients of these vehicles.
Additionally, the Abia government reportedly spent N362,804,050.00 on trucks and N400,890,000.00 on buses. Notably, only N25 million was earmarked for the repair of public schools in the state, raising concerns given the deteriorating condition of many public schools across Abia.
Critics argue that such disproportionate spending, especially on personal and luxury items, while neglecting critical sectors like education, calls for accountability and a thorough review of the state’s financial priorities. The revelation has sparked public outrage and intensified calls for transparent governance and judicious allocation of resources.
