This development coincides with the commencement of zonal public hearings on the new wage structure across six geopolitical zones, including Lagos, Kano, Enugu, Akwa Ibom, Adamawa, and Abuja.

During a recent interview on Arise TV, Joe Ajaero, the President of the NLC, suggested the potential pursuit of a minimum wage as high as N1 million should the current inflationary trends persist. This statement highlights the challenging economic conditions faced by many Nigerian workers, emphasizing the urgent need for wage adjustments reflective of the prevailing realities.

Speaking anonymously to Punch, a high-ranking NLC official disclosed that, based on proposals from state chapters, the figure under consideration at the ongoing meeting is N500,000. This proposition aims to address the substantial decline in purchasing power and the hardships endured by workers due to the current economic conditions.

The ongoing public hearings aim to gather insights and inputs from various stakeholders, including state governors, ministers, civil society groups, and the private sector. The objective is to reach a consensus on a new minimum wage that aligns with economic realities and fulfills the aspirations of workers.

The hearings are chaired by prominent figures, with Joe Ajaero presiding over the session in Yola, Adamawa State, representing the North-East zone. The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Wale Edun, is leading the South-West hearing in Lagos.

This initiative follows the inauguration of a 37-member panel by President Bola Tinubu’s deputy, Kashim Shettima, on January 30, 2024. The panel, comprising representatives from the federal and state governments, the private sector, and labor, is tasked with recommending a new national minimum wage by April 1, following the expiration of the current N30,000 minimum wage.

Ajaero emphasized that the proposed N1 million minimum wage might become relevant if the value of the naira continues to depreciate and inflation remains unchecked, given that labor demands are influenced by societal conditions.

In a separate interview with Punch, another top NLC official stated that organized labor would insist on an amount slightly above N500,000 as the minimum wage, based on the analysis of proposals from state chapters. The official explained that after accounting for cost-of-living considerations, the analysis carried out in states indicated a figure over N500,000.

The official affirmed that the NLC’s demand would depend on the proposals submitted from state and local government chapters, emphasizing that the NLC would not request a national minimum wage lower than what the people from all the local governments in Nigeria have proposed.
