Lagos Assembly Clashes With IGP Over State Police Proposal....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The Lagos State House of Assembly has voiced its opposition to Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun’s position against the implementation of state police. Speaker Mudashiru Obasa instructed the Clerk of the House to communicate the lawmakers’ disagreement with Egbetokun’s stance to him and the National Assembly.
Egbetokun, during a recent discussion on state policing, argued that the establishment of state police could escalate ethnic tensions and result in divided loyalties. He proposed consolidating the Federal Road Safety Corps and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps with the police force as an alternative.
However, Speaker Obasa countered, asserting that merging these agencies would not effectively address issues such as road accidents and pipeline vandalism. Despite substantial support provided to the police command in Lagos State through the Security Trust Fund, crime remains a persistent challenge.
Obasa emphasized the potential effectiveness of state police in crime prevention and resolution, drawing parallels with policing systems in the UK and the US. He urged the National Assembly to continue efforts towards constitutional amendments for the establishment of state police.
Lawmakers supported the Speaker’s position, arguing that the current police structure is insufficient for ensuring national security. They highlighted the existence of local security outfits in many states, underscoring the necessity and practicality of implementing state police.
