Dr. Babatunde Ajayi, the General Manager of the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), conveyed this message during a recent media briefing dedicated to analyzing the implications of the prevailing air quality in specific locations, as indicated by the index. The chart delineated regions with both hazardous and moderately satisfactory air quality levels.

In response, LASEPA calls for public comprehension and concerted efforts to formulate a shared and sustainable action plan aimed at mitigating the adverse effects of climate change and its repercussions on human health. Dr. Ajayi highlighted that the air quality index underscores the necessity for increased environmental consciousness among the populace. He urged residents to reconsider their habits and collaborate with the government to safeguard the environment through eco-friendly actions and initiatives.

The LASEPA general manager cautioned that individuals in affected areas might face respiratory-related illnesses if the situation is not promptly addressed. He identified agricultural and industrial emissions as primary contributors to the deteriorating air quality, citing concerns such as the burning of cow skin and emissions from densely industrialized zones.

To address these challenges, Ajayi advocated for the inclusion of tree planting in major celebrations to augment the number of trees in public spaces. He stressed the need to intensify tree planting advocacy in both public and private schools to instill a green culture in the youth, asserting that “green energy is safer, more secure, and very environmentally-friendly than diesel or gasoline oil.”

Furthermore, Ajayi recommended reducing the number of vehicles on roads through practices like carpooling or a preference for public transportation, discouraging the daily use of individual vehicles. He assured that LASEPA would persist in monitoring the environment and implementing policies to ensure compliance with government regulations, ultimately striving for a cleaner, safer, and pollution-free environment befitting the state’s status.
