Lakurawa, which is linked to al-Qaeda’s branch in the Sahel, Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), has been involved in violent activities, including attacks on military sites and local civilians in Sokoto and Kebbi states. They are known for their rejection of Boko Haram’s label, instead preferring terms like Mujahideen or Ansaru, aligning themselves more closely with al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM).
Initially formed in response to the escalating banditry in Sokoto, Lakurawa’s influence grew after local leaders in the Gudu and Tangaza LGAs invited them to help defend communities. However, the group’s role shifted over time, as they became more militant, imposing their ideology on local communities and engaging in violent actions. They have since expanded, operating alongside bandits and Fulani communities.
The recent coup in Niger, coupled with the breakdown in military cooperation between Nigerian and Nigerien forces, has given Lakurawa more freedom to operate and furthered their threat in the region. Despite attempts by Nigerian forces to combat the group, including joint operations with Nigerien troops, Lakurawa continues to be a significant security challenge.
