Professor Yinka Olomojobi, an esteemed scholar specializing in Human Rights and Gender Law, met a tragic end last Friday, April 19, when he fell victim to a fatal shooting by suspected kidnappers in Iperu Remo, Ogun State.
In his final days, Professor Olomojobi shared his insights on armed conflict and human rights law during an interview with Vanguard. He expressed deep concerns about the prevailing security challenges in the nation, emphasizing the imperative for the government to adopt a firm and unwavering approach in dealing with kidnappers and terrorists to dissuade potential offenders. Beyond security matters, he addressed various other pertinent issues.
When queried about the Nigerian government’s contemplation of granting amnesty to terrorists and insurgents, Professor Olomojobi cautioned against such leniency. He argued that perpetrators of heinous acts, having violated international humanitarian laws and infringed upon fundamental human rights, should not be granted amnesty.
He stated, “Once there’s a breach of human rights law and the sanctity of life is violated, leniency should not be entertained. Offering amnesty may inadvertently encourage future insurgencies, as it sets a precedent for potential offenders.”
Professor Olomojobi advocated for strict adherence to legal procedures in handling such cases. He emphasized the necessity of holding individuals accountable for breaches of international humanitarian laws and human rights violations, asserting that justice should be served accordingly.
Furthermore, he underscored the importance of applying this principle to other criminal offenses, including kidnapping and corruption, which pose significant challenges in the country. He firmly believed that imposing appropriate punishments for crimes committed would serve as a potent deterrent against future transgressions.
