Last-Minute Twist!” – Seyi Makinde, Bala Mohammed May Rethink Exit From Peoples Democratic Party
There are growing indications that the governors of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, and Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, may be reconsidering their reported plans to defect to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) following recent developments within the party.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Sources close to the Oyo governor and the ADC revealed that both leaders have slowed down consultations regarding a possible switch, particularly after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) withdrew recognition of the party’s leadership.
Further findings suggest that INEC’s decision has created uncertainty among members of the National Assembly and other politicians who had been considering joining the ADC.
On Wednesday, the electoral body removed the names of the party’s National Working Committee led by former Senate President, David Mark, from its official portal.
INEC explained that the move followed a ruling by the Court of Appeal directing all parties involved in the leadership dispute to maintain the status quo pending the outcome of a substantive case before the Federal High Court in Abuja.
The crisis stems from an ongoing leadership struggle within the ADC, with rival factions led by Nafiu Gombe and David Mark both laying claim to control of the party.
According to the commission, the appellate court, in its March 12, 2026 judgment, instructed all parties to avoid actions that could affect the final outcome of the case.
Despite this, the faction aligned with Mark rejected INEC’s decision and called for the dissolution of the electoral body, insisting it would proceed with preparations for its national convention scheduled for April 14 in Abuja.
The internal crisis has raised concerns about the party’s stability, especially as political alignments begin to take shape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Earlier reports had suggested that Makinde and Bala Mohammed were among prominent figures considering a move to the ADC amid ongoing tensions within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Bala Mohammed, who also chairs the PDP Governors’ Forum, had hinted at a possible defection after meeting with a delegation led by former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, at the Presidential Lodge in Bauchi.
He noted that efforts to resolve internal disputes within the PDP had been exhausted, describing the ADC as a potential alternative while consultations were still ongoing.
However, a source close to Makinde suggested that the Oyo State governor may be losing interest in the ADC following INEC’s decision, noting a noticeable decline in his engagement with party leaders.
Reacting to the speculation, Makinde’s Special Adviser on Media, Sulaimon Olanrewaju, dismissed claims that the governor was planning to leave the PDP, describing such reports as mere rumours.
Similarly, the Bauchi State chapter of the PDP maintained that Governor Bala Mohammed remains a member of the party.
The party’s Publicity Secretary, Dayyabu Chiroma, stated that despite ongoing political consultations, no decision has been made to defect.
He added that while a committee has been set up to assess the party’s future, the PDP in Bauchi remains united and committed to the platform.
