The Chairman of LASTCOC, Mr. Lukman Shittu, expressed his concerns during discussions with the media in Lagos. He recounted an incident where thugs, purportedly collecting tolls at Berger bus stop along the Mile 2-Oshodi express road, accosted a loaded container truck for extortion. When the driver resisted, one of the thugs forcibly entered the driver’s cabin, attempting to take control of the steering wheel. This led to the truck swerving across the road and colliding with parked vehicles. As the driver tried to fend off the attackers, he was stabbed from behind, requiring immediate hospitalization.

Shittu highlighted a previous incident on December 5, 2023, at the same location, where similar thugs caused a truck to overturn, resulting in significant financial losses for the importer and truck owner. He emphasized that the activities of these lawless elements are negatively impacting the transportation business in Lagos State, discouraging foreign investors from participating in the sector.

According to Shittu, the actions of these hoodlums go beyond mere financial losses; they damage trucks, pilfer cargo in transit, extort money, and physically assault drivers. This not only leads to road accidents but also contributes to traffic congestion, creating an unbearable situation for the general public. The chairman pointed out that these destructive elements pose a threat to the success of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s T.H.E.M.E agenda plus policy in transportation.

Shittu urged the government at all levels, relevant stakeholders, and those concerned about the economic well-being of Nigeria and Lagos State to address this menace promptly. He called for decisive action against these hoodlums, who operate under the guise of working for various transport unions and local authorities, undermining the haulage business, import-export economy, revenue generation, trade facilitation, and the seamless movement of cargoes to and from the nation’s seaports in the state.
