Wayas, who served as Senate President from October 1, 1979, to December 31, 1983, passed away on November 30, 2021, at the age of 80 in a London hospital after battling a prolonged illness. His body was transported via British Airways flight 083 from Heathrow Airport, London, and arrived at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, at 4:40 am local time. Jarigbe Agom, Peter Akpanke, family members, kinsmen, and various stakeholders were present to receive and place his remains in the morgue at the National Hospital, Abuja.
Jarigbe expressed gratitude to Cross River State Governor Bassey Otu for facilitating the repatriation and anticipated a fitting burial for the late Senate President. Dignitaries, including Senator Eteng Jonah Williams, Rt. Hon. Mike Etaba, Ntufam Fidelis Ugbo, Jonny Agim, SAN, and Hon. Cletus Obun, among others, have paid their respects and signed the condolence register at Wayas’ residence in Asokoro, Abuja.
