However, five nominees were approved as commissioners-designate after a thorough session that lasted over two hours. The plenary, presided over by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, concluded the exercise with the following confirmations: Tonye Belgam, Prof. Temple Nwofor, Dr. Peters Nwagor, Lekue Kenneth, and Sir Amarigha Edward-Hart.
Speaking after the session, Amaewhule said the House’s resolution would be forwarded to the governor for the swearing-in of the five approved nominees.
“I will forward a letter to the governor requesting that the five confirmed nominees be sworn in as soon as possible,” the Speaker stated.
The four nominees who were rejected include Prof. Datonye Alasia, Tamuno Williams, Otonye T.K.D. Amachree, and Charity Deemua. Amaewhule explained that their nominations were declined due to poor performance during the screening and controversies surrounding their credentials.
“At the end of the exercise, the House confirmed five nominees. Four others were withheld due to unsatisfactory performance and issues raised about their documents,” he said.
The Speaker added that the rejected candidates failed to convince lawmakers that they were fit to serve in the state executive council.
“They have not demonstrated to this august assembly that they are capable or prepared to serve Rivers State. They are not the right fit for the offices they were nominated to occupy,” Amaewhule emphasized.
During questioning, Charity Deemua faced scrutiny over inconsistencies in her tax clearance. She explained that her tax records had not been updated since December 31, 2018, citing her status as a politician without formal employment.
“As I said, I’m a politician; we don’t have offices or salaries. Tax is based on income,” she claimed.
Amaewhule challenged the response, asking if politicians were exempt from paying taxes. Deemua later issued an apology following further questioning.
Tamuno Williams failed to recite the second stanza of the national anthem when prompted by the House Leader, Major Jack. Meanwhile, over ten petitions had been filed against Otonye Amachree, including an electronic petition submitted during the plenary, as reported by Dr. Enemi George, Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Complaints, and Petitions.
In a statement released by the Speaker’s media aide, Martin Wachukwu, the House noted that the screening was conducted under Section 192 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which involved verification of academic qualifications, work experience, tax compliance, and review of petitions against the nominees.
The Speaker reaffirmed that the purpose of the scrutiny was to ensure that only competent individuals capable of delivering effective governance are appointed to the Rivers State Executive Council. The Clerk of the House has been directed to forward the confirmation of the five approved nominees to the governor.
