LATEST: Edo Assembly Gets New Speaker, Principal Officers After Agbebaku’s Sh*ck Exit
Yekini Idiaye, who represents Akoko Edo Constituency I, has emerged as the new Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly following the resignation of Blessing Agbebaku.
Idiaye was elected Speaker during Monday’s plenary session after Agbebaku stepped down amid growing tension within the Assembly and reports of moves to remove him from office.
The sitting was presided over by the Deputy Speaker, Osamwonye Atu, who informed lawmakers that the House had received Agbebaku’s resignation letter.
Following the announcement, Sunday Ojiezele, representing Esan South East Constituency, nominated Idiaye for the Speakership. The nomination was seconded by Eric Okaka, the lawmaker representing Owan East Constituency.
The Clerk of the House subsequently administered the oath of office on Idiaye, who immediately assumed the leadership of the Assembly.
The lawmakers also approved changes to the leadership of the majority caucus following a letter from the Edo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Under the new arrangement, Sunday Ojiezele was appointed Majority Leader, while Ojie Inegbebor, representing Igueben Constituency, became Deputy Majority Leader.
The Assembly also considered and approved a letter from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) nominating Natasha Osawaru as the new Minority Leader.
The latest changes have ushered in a new leadership structure in the Edo State House of Assembly, with Idiaye now taking charge of the Eighth Assembly.
