LATEST: Keyamo Reveals Why Tinubu Green-Lighted Abia’s International Airport Construction
The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has revealed that the new international airport to be built in Abia State is part of President Bola Tinubu’s strategy to advance the development of the South East.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Keyamo explained that Tinubu’s vision is to ensure no part of Nigeria is left behind, emphasizing that the new airport will turn Abia into a commercial hub for the region.
He made these comments on Tuesday during the flag-off ceremony of the Abia International Airport in Nsulu, Abia State.
The airport project is primarily a federal initiative, with the state government contributing by upgrading the runway. Originally an airstrip, the airport will be transformed into an international facility.
Keyamo shared that during a recent Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, he informed the president of his visit to Abia, to which Tinubu expressed great enthusiasm and instructed him to attend the event.
The Minister recounted a conversation with Tinubu shortly after assuming office, where the president asked why Abia didn’t have at least an airstrip. Tinubu, according to Keyamo, remarked that no part of the country should be “cheated” and pointed out that Abia was the only state in the South East without an operational airport. He instructed that provisions be made for an airstrip in the 2024 budget.
Keyamo attributed the president’s motivation to his admiration for Abia’s governor, saying, “He (Tinubu) loves his spirit.” He also recalled how Governor Alex Otti expressed his willingness to partner and contribute counterpart funding to upgrade the airstrip to an international airport.
Highlighting Abia as the industrial heart of the South East, Keyamo stressed that it was only logical for the state to have an airport. He further revealed plans for the airport to serve both passengers and cargo, positioning it as a key infrastructure project for the region’s economic growth.
