Several operators were apprehended during the crackdown, which targeted establishments on Erie Street and Sokponba Road. The raid, reportedly conducted in the morning, resulted in the arrest of multiple individuals involved in operating these currency exchange businesses.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, one of the detained operators expressed surprise at the sudden enforcement action, stating that they were not informed of their alleged offenses prior to the arrests. According to the operator, if all employees had been present at the time of the raid, more arrests would likely have occurred.
Comparisons were drawn to a previous visit by officials from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), where no arrests were made, suggesting that the police operation may have been intended to intimidate Bureau de Change operators.
Confirming the incident, the Public Relations Officer of the Edo State Command, SP Chidi Nwabuzor, explained that the operation was conducted in accordance with directives from the federal government. However, specific details regarding the reasons behind the raids and the charges faced by the detained operators were not disclosed at the time of reporting.
