Expressing dismay over the conduct of local government elections, Osoba lamented the trend where virtually every incumbent government claims a flawless victory. He pointed out the discrepancy between local and general elections, where states boasting perfect scores often struggle or fail in broader electoral contests, reflecting poorly on the democratic process.

Osoba’s remarks follow a recent Supreme Court ruling granting financial autonomy to local governments, directing that federal allocations be paid directly to their exclusive accounts, independent of gubernatorial control. The court’s decision also prohibits governors from arbitrarily dissolving duly elected local councils.

Highlighting public sentiment, Osoba underscored the necessity of genuine local government autonomy, advocating for transparent elections free from state interference. He emphasized the importance of party discipline in electoral processes at all levels—local, state, and federal—criticizing prevalent practices that prioritize financial prowess over democratic principles.

Addressing internal party dynamics within the All Progressives Congress (APC), Osoba advocated for direct primaries over delegate systems, arguing that the former reduces corruption and empowers registered party members. He urged a return to the disciplined structures reminiscent of the late political icon, Pa Obafemi Awolowo’s era, where party consensus and regular consultations were integral.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s democratic journey since 1999, Osoba acknowledged its ups and downs while emphasizing the stability achieved in the Fourth Republic. He called for a consensus-driven approach to restructuring Nigeria’s political framework, emphasizing the role of the National Assembly in effecting meaningful reforms.
