Expressing their discontent, the residents urged the AEDC to promptly address the issue of poor power supply, emphasizing that the continual lack of electricity was adversely affecting businesses in the state.

Led by Mallam Illiasu Zakari, the chairman of the ‘Light Up Movement’ pressure group, the protesters highlighted that they had been grappling with power outages since before the Christmas and New Year celebrations, with no resolution from the AEDC.

In addition to their demand for improved power supply, the group called for an end to exorbitant billing practices by the AEDC in the state. They warned of further mobilization if the company failed to address the issues raised, emphasizing their dissatisfaction with surcharges and the negative portrayal of their movement.

The protesters displayed placards conveying messages such as “We are tired of frequent power outages, epileptic power supply in Lokoja and its environs,” “AEDC should give us light to boost our economic fortunes in the state,” and “Stop the outrageous billings.”

Inuwa Isa, one of the demonstrators, highlighted the ongoing challenges with electricity availability, noting that even before the festive season, residents experienced prolonged periods of darkness.

Emmanuel Ajibogun, the Area Manager of AEDC in Lokoja, engaged with the protesters and praised them for their peaceful conduct. He assured them that their grievances would be addressed, indicating that a round table discussion with community leaders would be organized promptly.

The adverse effects of the power issues were particularly felt by residents, iron fabricators, petty traders, restaurants and bars, as well as sachet water sellers who reported a decline in sales due to the unreliable power supply.
