The proposed amount exceeds the total spent on the fleet between July 2023 and September 2024, which was ₦19.43 billion. Critics argue that in light of Nigeria’s economic difficulties, the allocation is a misguided priority.

Kamorudeen Ajisafe, the South-West PDP Chairman, questioned whether the presidency planned to acquire more aircraft. Similarly, Labour Party National Publicity Secretary Abayomi Arabambi described the allocation as “inhuman and satanic,” condemning the government for focusing on luxury while millions of Nigerians face hardship.

The budget breakdown includes ₦8.6 billion for air navigation equipment repairs, ₦5.5 billion for overhauling an aircraft engine, and ₦1.5 billion for aircraft fuel, among other expenses. Notably, ₦311.1 million is set aside for aircraft insurance, which is likely to be handled by foreign insurers.

Arabambi pointed out that the presidential fleet already owns several aircraft, including a recently purchased Airbus A330, which cost over $100 million, further questioning the justification for such an allocation.

Debo Adeniran, Executive Chairman of the Centre for Anti-Corruption and Open Leadership, criticized the government’s “profligate” spending habits, urging a re-evaluation of priorities. He stressed that the proposed expenditure on presidential jets was a national disgrace, calling on Nigerians to demand better from their leaders.
