Moruf Erubami was sworn in unopposed as the Speaker of the House, but tensions quickly escalated when councillors called for a vote to elect additional principal officers. The disagreement led to a split within the 16-member assembly, with nine members backing one side and seven opposing it.
Oyegbola, who had recently been sworn in as one of the 20 elected local government chairmen by Governor Dapo Abiodun, attended the event held at the council’s Secretariat in Akomoje, Abeokuta. However, sources at the scene reported that after the Speaker’s acceptance speech, chaos broke out. Police officers assigned to the chairman reportedly began firing shots outside the chambers, heightening the tension.
It was then that youths loyal to the chairman allegedly stormed the legislative chambers and made off with the mace, leaving the event in disarray. Leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and other attendees reportedly fled the scene for safety.
Erubami, who represents Ward 15, confirmed the incident, stating that the inauguration could not proceed due to the mace being taken. “They took the mace and dropped it inside the chairman’s patrol vehicle,” he told Daily Trust. He explained that the disagreement arose when the members insisted on holding a vote to elect other principal officers, but Oyegbola was reportedly against it, wanting to install his own choices without a vote.
“The house is divided—nine members against seven. The chairman supports the group of seven. That’s why they didn’t want voting to take place; they knew we had the majority,” Erubami added.
Efforts to contact Chairman Oyegbola for comment were unsuccessful, as calls to his mobile phone went unanswered, and he did not respond to text messages or WhatsApp inquiries at the time of this report. His media aide, Oluwakayode Ajibola, also declined to comment, stating he was in a meeting.
