Chris Okewulonu, the former Chief of Staff to ex-Imo State Governor Emeka Ihedioha, has officially defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), accompanied by Ihedioha’s former deputy governorship candidate, Chuma Nnaji, and their supporters.
The announcement was made on Friday at the APC secretariat in Owerri, Imo State’s capital.

Speaking to party members, Okewulonu explained his decision to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), where he had also served on the Board of Trustees. He recalled that a few months ago, he resigned from both the PDP and its Board of Trustees.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

“My decision to leave the PDP came after deep reflection and consultations with my family, political colleagues, and well-wishers. I left because the values that initially attracted me to the party had been progressively eroded and lost,” he said.

Okewulonu further revealed that his time away from active politics allowed him to closely evaluate Imo’s political situation.

“Amid the ongoing divisions in the leading opposition parties, I questioned whether, as a statesman, I could continue supporting a weak, nearly non-existent opposition or if I should instead work towards improving the lives of my people,” he added.

He also praised Governor Hope Uzodimma’s leadership, highlighting the transformative impact of the 3R administration in Imo State.

“Five years into the administration, I am convinced that Governor Uzodimma’s leadership has brought significant development to Imo, with major infrastructure projects and initiatives focused on human capacity building,” Okewulonu stated.

Governor Uzodimma welcomed the defectors, calling their move a strong endorsement of APC’s progress in Imo State.

“APC was once misunderstood, but today, it’s the only party genuinely working for the people of Imo. Political figures who want the state to progress are now joining the winning party. We must solve the problems of our people or risk being condemned by history,” the governor said.

Uzodimma likened the defectors’ decision to top athletes joining a winning team, adding, “I thank Okewulonu and Chuma Nnaji for joining us. We now have the Ronaldos and Lionel Messis in our party.”

Nnaji, a former Deputy Speaker of the Imo State House of Assembly, expressed optimism about APC’s future under Uzodimma, stating, “We didn’t come alone—over 3,000 supporters are joining us.”

Other prominent defectors included Paschal Obi, a former House of Representatives member for Ideato South, and Tochukwu Okere of Owerri Federal Constituency, further strengthening APC’s dominance in Imo State.
