According to Taofiq’s statement, LASTMA operatives apprehended the truck driver after the fatal incident. The collision occurred between the 16-tyre articulated truck ‘DAF’ (LSR 901 XV) and a scavenger pushing a wheelbarrow on the main carriageway near Mile 12 Market, Ikorodu Road, Lagos, heading towards Ketu along Ikorodu Expressway.

Although LASTMA officers managed to rescue the victim from the accident scene, the individual succumbed to injuries shortly afterward. Preliminary investigations indicated that the articulated truck’s brake failure caused the driver to lose control at high speed, leading to the collision with the scavenger on the main carriage way toward Ketu, Lagos.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, a group of miscreants and thugs targeted the truck driver. However, quick action by LASTMA officials, assisted by security officers, prevented harm to the driver, who was subsequently taken to Ketu Police Divisional Headquarters.

LASTMA’s General Manager, Mr. Bakare-Oki Olalekan, appealed to market leaders to conduct regular safety awareness campaigns regarding the hazards of using wheelbarrows to transport goods or food items on highways across the state. The incident highlights the importance of road safety and the need for continuous efforts to educate the public on responsible practices, emphasizing the potential dangers associated with brake failures and unsafe transportation methods.
