Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed that the violence stemmed from a clash between rival cult groups, resulting in at least two fatalities.
However, conflicting reports from eyewitnesses and community sources, as cited by The Guardian, suggest the death toll may be significantly higher, with claims that five or more individuals lost their lives.
Graphic videos circulating on social media appear to show at least seven bodies with gunshot wounds, further fueling public anxiety over the growing insecurity in the region.
A staff member of Federal Polytechnic Oko, who requested anonymity, disclosed that two lecturers were abducted during the incident. One other employee was reportedly shot and is receiving medical treatment at a nearby hospital.
The institution’s spokesperson, Ibe Nzimako, confirmed that the gunfire occurred outside the school’s premises in the host community. He acknowledged the abduction of one lecturer and reassured the public that no students were harmed.
This disturbing episode mirrors a similar cult-related shooting in October 2024 in the Nibo community, where over ten lives were lost.
The killings in Oko come at a politically sensitive time as Anambra prepares for its upcoming governorship election. The community is located just a few kilometers from Isuofia, the hometown of the current governor, Professor Charles Soludo.
