However, Real Madrid remained in control and eventually restored their three-goal advantage in stoppage time. Mbappe collected the ball before producing a composed low finish into the far corner to complete his brace.

The victory further strengthened Madrid’s impressive home record against Rayo, with the capital club extending their run to 14 wins in their last 15 meetings with their city rivals at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Real Madrid’s latest victory moved them level on points with Barcelona, although the Catalan giants had an opportunity to regain a three-point advantage when they faced Levante on Sunday.
