The strike, which began on Monday, August 26th, was initiated to demand the release of Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, a NARD member who has been held captive for over eight months. Dr. Popoola, a registrar in the Department of Ophthalmology at the National Eye Centre in Kaduna, was abducted on December 27, 2023, along with her husband and nephew.

The abduction took place at the senior staff quarters of the eye centre. While her husband was released in March after negotiations with the kidnappers, Dr. Popoola and her nephew remain in captivity.

Speaking on the suspension of the strike, Dr. Abdullahi told *The Cable* that the action was halted after reaching an agreement with the government on a set of measures. He mentioned that the progress of these agreed actions will be reviewed in three weeks and called on the government to take serious steps to address kidnappings, banditry, and other security challenges.

“It was a seven-day warning strike, so we suspended it yesterday. The engagement with the federal government is currently progressing well, and they have agreed to a course of action,” Dr. Abdullahi said. “We will reconvene in three weeks to assess the government’s progress.”
