In the video, two soldiers are seen forcibly restraining and striking a civilian dressed in military attire with a belt and cane.
Maj-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, in a statement, emphasized that the incident occurred in 2021 and the soldier involved was promptly apprehended and disciplined accordingly.
“The Nigerian Army has noted the recent recirculation of an old video showing a soldier mistreating a civilian for wearing a Nigerian Army Desert Camouflage uniform,” Nwachukwu stated.
“The video footage in question is outdated and is being re-circulated by individuals or content creators either lacking in content or with malicious intent to stir discord between the military and the civilian population.”
He reiterated that such behavior violates the core values of the Nigerian Army, particularly respect for others and their fundamental rights.
Regarding the use of military uniforms by civilians, Nwachukwu underscored that only personnel of the Armed Forces of Nigeria and the Nigeria Police Force are legally permitted to wear military camouflage.
“The ban on unauthorized use of military camouflage remains fully enforced,” he affirmed. “This regulation is crucial as terrorists, insurgents, and other criminals often exploit camouflage misuse to perpetrate crimes against unsuspecting members of the public, posing significant security risks.”
Nwachukwu concluded by reaffirming the Nigerian Army’s commitment to upholding the law and ensuring the safety and security of all citizens.
