Otuasega, Bayelsa State – The Honourable Minister of Niger Delta Development, Engr. Abubakar Momoh FNSE, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his visionary leadership and renewed commitment to the sustainable development of the Niger Delta, as the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), in collaboration with the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), launched the 2025 series of free medical outreaches in Otuasega, Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

The initiative was officially flagged off by the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,Her Excellency, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, who also commissioned landmark projects including the renovated Otuasega Cottage Hospital and a newly built Community Secondary School, both executed by the NDDC.

In her address, the First Lady emphasized the federal government’s commitment to providing accessible and affordable healthcare to communities across the Niger Delta. She stated that the medical outreach initiative was designed to deliver specialized health services directly to rural areas, tackling prevalent health challenges, especially in maternal and child health. Senator Tinubu also announced the donation of 11 fully equipped ambulances and the introduction of a community-focused health insurance scheme aimed at covering thousands of families in the region — ensuring that quality healthcare is not a privilege, but a right for all Nigerians.

In his remarks, Minister Momoh highlighted that more than 32,000 people benefited from last year’s edition of the medical outreach — a testament to the growing efficiency and impact of the NDDC. He attributed these successes to President Tinubu’s focused leadership, which has repositioned regional development as a national priority.

“This is the result of deliberate policy and political will. The President’s support has given the NDDC a new lease of life, and we are now seeing results that truly touch lives,” the Minister stated.

He also emphasized the importance of synergy between federal and state actors, urging state governments to view regional development agencies as partners in progress, not competitors.

Also speaking at the event, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, Managing Director of the NDDC, stated that the Commission is transforming from a transactional agency to a transformational one. He expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for his continued support and noted that the renewed mandate of the NDDC is already delivering meaningful impact across the Niger Delta.

The newly commissioned Otuasega Cottage Hospital is now equipped with a 60KVA solar power system, 100KVA diesel generator, water treatment plant with full reticulation, state-of-the-art dental suites with X-ray, a labour and delivery room, a 4-bed ultra-modern operating theatre, and a digital colour Doppler ultrasound system. It also features paved walkways and staff quarters, making it a fully functional medical facility.

The outreach also included the donation of 11 ambulances to hospitals across the nine Niger Delta states, specialised PPE kits to selected tertiary institutions, and desks, benches, and textbooks to enhance learning at the Community Secondary School, Otuasega.

Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State, who was present at the event, commended the federal government, the Ministry of Niger Delta Development, and the NDDC for bringing direct interventions to communities in the state.

This event underscores a growing momentum in the effort to reposition the Niger Delta — not just as a vital contributor to Nigeria’s economy, but as a hub of inclusive growth, quality healthcare, and educational advancement.
