In recent times, some Nigerian filmmakers have taken to social media to accuse colleagues of conspiring with cinema operators to prevent movies that were already scheduled from showing. Fans have also claimed that when they go to watch a particular Nigerian film, cinema staff sometimes redirect them to another movie, claiming their chosen film is no longer playing.
Speaking on ARISE Television on Saturday, Abudu clarified that cinema operations are purely business-driven, emphasizing that films generating strong ticket sales are given priority.
According to the media executive, cinema owners and investors make decisions based on returns, not personal bias or favoritism.
She explained, “There is no cabal. It’s not about sentiment or favoritism—it’s about return on investment. If a movie cannot fill seats, it will be replaced, regardless of who produced it. If I’m running air-conditioning, paying staff, and only two or three people are in a 100-seat cinema, that film will lose its slot. It’s purely business.”
